2021 Grant Competition
On September 24, 2020, the application submission for grants from the Russian Geographical Society for 2021 started on the grant.rgo.ru website.
Applications for grants from the regional branches of the Russian Geographical Society for 2021 are accepted from September 24 to October 31, 2020. Applications for initiative grants for 2021 are accepted from September 24 to November 4, 2020.
RGS grant application conditions
Any person or organization can apply for a grant. Applications are accepted only through a unified electronic system on the website grant.rgo.ru. It can be used by the registered users.
Grant Categories
- Initiative grants are aimed at supporting projects initiated by the President of the Society, members of the Board of Trustees and the Governing Council, as well as boards and committees of the Society.
- Grants from the regional branches are aimed at supporting projects submitted by the regional branches of the Society.

Applications for the initiative grants must contain a letter of support from the members of the Board of Trustees or Governing Councils, or a protocol on the nomination of the project from the councils and commissions of the Society.
Regional office grants are subject to preliminary expertise by regional experts.
Grant funding limits for regional branches and media grants
Categories and amount of funding for one grant (RUB):
Geographic research - 1 800 000 RUB
Organizing expeditions and trips - 2 500 000 RUB
Geographic education and enlightenment - 700 000 RUB
Publishing - 700 000 RUB
Preservation of the natural, historical and cultural heritage of Russia, including through UNESCO programs - 700 000 RUB
Preserving wildlife - 700 000 RUB
Youth projects - 700 000 RUB
The main criteria of the grant competition
- Openness to accept applications, and equal access to grants.
- Transparency of the application process.
- Support for projects based on co-financing principles.
- Prospects for further implementation of the project after the completion of grant financing.
- The grant is funded for a period of 1 year.
- The name and content of the grant should not match with the name and content of any planned research work carried out in the organization and financed from the federal budget.
- The amount of expenses for the full-time employee salary should not exceed 65% of the grant amount in the nomination "Conducting geographical research" and 50% for all other nominations (including all taxes and fees).
