In 1942-1945, the Birma Military Aviation School of Pilots, evacuated from the Far East, was based in Chernogorsk. It had trained 1,215 fighter pilots for the front. Six graduates of the school became Heroes of the Soviet Union, and former pilot-instructor Konstantin Evstigneev received this title twice. During the war years, 27 cadets and instructors of the aviation school were killed in training flights.
